You know that feeling... it starts out with a gallon of paint then you decide you need new carpet but since you doing that maybe you should take a wall out make a room larger. It goes for a while and then you decide you want to move.

Will that is what we are thinking at Sugar Mama's. We dreamed of having a web site where you could just click on different galleries; wedding, specialty cakes, cookies, cupcakes and other specialty treats. Wouldn’t it be nice if our customers really knew how to order from us and knew our pricing? Then we thought we would love to have tutorials and another room for contest. Oh my and we went on and on... how about a little shopping? We keep dreaming, wouldn’t it be fun if you could just click on categories say like "children s cake" and you could get all our post for children's cakes and you could get some ideas for an upcoming birthday?
We also wanted a category for parties to give you some dreams for birthday invitations, favors, games and of course the cake.

We have had fun at our current blog but it is time to move. Our new web site it "www.sugarmamasonline.com "

It seems this year the most popular color for weddings is blue. Not just any blue but a tiffany blue. I recently attended a wedding and seen this beautiful cake. I had to come home and duplicate it. I used cake dummies. I don’t think you would want to bit into it. But I just wanted to play around with some new techniques. The actual cake had a beautiful broach attached to the bow and the stencils was a simpler design.

You may have followed my daughter A Jorney of Healing and Happiness blog and her story of little Aaron. We sure loved and miss him but even though our little Aaron is not here we want to keep his memory alive and we do this by dong errands for non profit organizations. We call it Aaron's errands. Currently we are trying to raise money for the March of Dimes please help us help others that our struggleing with such sad times.

Macarons

Lately I have been testing how to bake macarons. You have probably heard that they are a little tricky to make. I have heard that too and actually I have heard that the French say that American's can't make them at all.

Here are some tips on detectinga good Macaron. See the little rim around the middle of the cookie that is called a foot. Your macaroon has to have a foot the tops cannot be cracked. I think my foot is a little bigger than it is supposed to be?

A Macaron is definitly not to be confused with a coconut macaroon (with two o's). When you bite into a macaron and you think "oh it's crunchy" and immediately you realize, "no it' s chewy". They are very light and tasty cookie.

They are made from almond flour and powder sugar. You can choose whatever filling that pleases you. The French quit often just use a jam or jelly. I choose Strawberry butter cream with fresh strawberries.

Will . . . did I make them correctly? I am not sure, but I am going to Paris this summer so I will check out the Macarons. I will have to check out the Macaron at Quest: Pierre Hermé on rue Bonaparte. I hear they bake over 17,000 macarons a day and that one macaron cost 5.00 US dollars. I will tell you when I get back if that is so.

Perfect Pie Dough is easy

We wanted to thank you for all your support. We thought one way would be to do a tutorial on how to make perfect pie crust. Happy Holidays!

You will need 3 cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoons salt, 10 tablespoons unsalted butter cold, 10 tablespoons vegetable shortening and 1/2 cup ice water (may need more or less depending on how dry your flour is)

This will make a 9 inch double pie and one single or three 9 inch single pies.

Add the flour, sugar and salt and mix.

Most receips will tell you to cut the butter up and add to flour and salt mixture. I think a good idea is the grade the butter into the mixture. It makes it easier to mix in.

With your pastry tool work the shortening, butter and salt together. Some people like to use their fingers and have good results with this.

Start out by using a pastry tool and work the dough. I always have to switch over and finish working it up with a fork.

Keep using your fork to work the dough until it looks like a fine cornmeal texture

Add the water and mix the dough until it starts to hold its shape. Be careful not to over work your dough this will make your pie dough tough.

Roll your dough up in three balls and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough set in the refergerator for at least 30 minutes

Roll your dough out about 1/8 inch think. I like to roll my dough out on parchment paper so that I don't have to use as much flour. Place the dough in a pie plate and pinch your edges.

The apple pie will need slits made in the pie. You can do something fancy or just a simple cut.

With the left over pie crest you can make a nice pie crest edge. You will need a small leaf cookie cutter. I choose an oak leaf cookie cutter.

Place the leafs around the edge of the pie. It is a good idea to take tin foil and cover the edge so it does not bake as quickly.

The finished products. Could have taken the pumpkin pie out of the oven just a bit sooner!

This cake is a reminder of the first snow. Happy Birthday to one of our own Sugar Mama's Brandi! She wanted one layer chocolate and one layer vanilla with a vanilla butter crean. The ice is made from white chocolate and the roses are made from fondant with little sprinkles of sugar.

300 Wedding Cupcakes

One of the treats that we get the most rave reviews on is our Candy Apples (seasonal). The most popular is our Carmel apple also dipped in white chocolate sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and a bit of chocolate drizzled over the apple. They make a great presentation. We have Carmelle, Carmel dipped in chocolate, nuts may be added.
